Happy Birthday, Candace

Here are a few highlights:

Day 1:  Frontier City, Falcone's Pizza (one of my favorites), a carriage ride and the Bricktown Candy Co.

When I was a lot younger and my parents took my brother, sister and me to Frontier City, we always sat on this tiger for a photo.  I'm a lot bigger now.

This was one of my favorite rides at Frontier City but I cannot remember what it's called.

A wall full of soda at the Bricktown Candy Co.

Day 2:  The OKC Zoo and the Melting Pot with Bubba!

The Elephants are back at the OKC Zoo.....and they have a baby!!!  If you've seen my logo, you know I LOVE elephants.  I was very excited to see them.

The giant Galapagos Turtles!!  They are massive and beautiful with a certain ancient quality that I love.  There were signs posted with "We Bite" but there was also this supposed non-English speaking family behind us.  They had two small children and the old man with them picked up some hay and gave it to one of the kids to feed to the turtle.  I stood watching, fascinated.  The turtle was leaning in close to eat (possibly some fingers) and just at the last second the turtle keeper ran over and pushed the turtle back.
Darn.

When we left the pachyderm building, this peacock was loose outside and fighting itself in the bumper of a truck.  Due to the fact that it was distracted, I had ample opportunity to snap a few photos.  Lovely!

I also liked the koi pond!!

My first time to eat at the Melting Pot and it was divine!  Can't wait to go again.  Yummy!  And special thanks to my friend Dianne on the best menu selections.  Wisconsin Trio was delicious!  And the
bananas with the dessert chocolate were the best!

Day 3:  The Oklahoma Aquarium

An albino turtle.

The living coral.  So beautiful.

Shark feed.  Can you believe all those people crammed in that little tunnel?  I would have lost it.

A jellyfish.  So colorful and one of my favorites.

Today is my actual birthday and my beautiful cousin Holly reminded me this morning, "always remember you are still very blessed and have lots of people who love you!"  Just what I needed to hear.  And thanks to her, my parents and all of the sweet birthday wishes from friends and family sent via text, email, Facebook and phone calls, I can't help but think I really do have an amazing life full of wonderful people and have had a truly amazing birthday.  Thank you everyone!!

Take me out to the ball game....all summer long

So this summer my little cousin, Brady, just started tee ball.  Here are a few of my favorite shots so far:

All smiles before his game.

Pulling a Babe Ruth before batting.

The look of sheer joy as he takes off for first base!

The look of comprehension as people call him back to the dugout after getting thrown out at first.  Come on, people!  This is tee ball.

Getting serious in the outfield.

Telling the fence who's boss.

You know what's fun about baseball....dirt.

Little pro!

You know what else is fun about baseball......bats.  Bats can also be swords.

Happy Birthday, Cortney!

Me (left) and Cortney (right)...happy, happy, happy!

Cortney is my sister!  For those of you who don't know her, here are 10 fun facts about her in honor of her birthday:

10.  We are only 11 months apart so for the next few weeks, we will be the same age.

9.  She hates most blogs but is a faithful reader of this one!  Always good to leave a comment and we agree on most everything-exept what Rue from the Hunger Games should look like.

8.  She is an animal lover and has a very tender heart.  When we were little, she watched Bambi until she wore out the VHS tape.  Also, one time my dad found a den of wild baby rabbits in the pasture and put them in a pet taxi.  I thought I'd open it and pet one.  It got away and the cat pounced.  Cortney saw all of this and stood in the yard wailing.

7.  She's a Truman Scholar and wore the coveted orange robe at her OSU graduation (though I don't think those things are related, they are both very impressive.)  She is an engineer (agricultural, biosystems and environmental).  And while at OSU, she played on intramural flag football and softball teams with names like Ninjaneers and Enginerds with other engineering majors at Oklahoma State.  She and her husband are 100% OSU Cowboys fans.

6.  She has traveled all over the world, but her favorite place is Washington, DC.

5.  Before she moved to Colorado we went to a salon together and cut all of our hair off.  It was donated to Locks of Love and we have both since grown it back out.

4.  She is the biggest Jane Austen fan in the entire world and her favorite Jane Austen work is Pride and Prejudice.

3.  She is very outgoing and can talk/make friends with anyone.

2.  She was an FFA State Officer.

1.  She's a Christian and can quote more Bible than anyone else I know.  She always does the right thing even if it's the hard thing.

So to everything my beautiful (inside and out) sister has been and to everything she will become, here is to Cortney, the one who sat beside me while we at bologna sandwiches in the bed of a pickup truck at the river:

Happy Birthday!

My Mom!

My mom and me on my first birthday.
She has a wicked, dark sense of humor (along the lines of Far Side comics).  She likes to watch 30 Rock with me ("It's not a leash.  It's a really long skin tag!").  She and my dad created their own recipe for salsa that is amazing (seriously-I think people at work might kidnap me and hold me ransom for some).  She grows most of the ingredients for said salsa in her garden.  She can sew and cook like no one else and she takes care of the family without fail.  She is a grammar wiz.  She's just like Martha Stewart....only nicer and prettier.  She's my mom and has been since the day I was born.....obviously!

And just for fun, here is a letter my brother dictated to my mom in 1995.  He was five years old and it was a school project:

It's funny that he mentions brushing teeth.  My mom was so hardcore about teeth brushing.  And all thanks to her, the mouths of me and my brother and sister have been cavity free.....forever.  Thanks, Mom!!!
