Hunger Games: The Movie: Mrs. Everdeen, District 3

A few more for you....and yes, if you haven't noticed, the people in charge of the movie are extremely enjoying sprinkling only a few names at a time and it's driving the Hunger Games crazed fans wild.  Excitement is definitely building with each new name and face and when the movie finally comes out it's going to be huge!

Mrs. Everdeen:  Paula Malcomson

District 12's resident "healer" is said to once have been a real beauty but after a hard life in the Seam, losing her husband in the coal mine, deep depression, raising two daughters on her own and then having to bid one farewell to the games have taken their toll.  Paula is perfect for this part.  She is far from unattractive but has that look of hard sadness that this role requires.  She has been in numerous TV series, including:  Caprica, Sons of Anarchy, The Event, ER and Deadwood.  She's seasoned and she has the look.  She's going to be great!!!

District 3 Girl Tribute:  Kalia Prescott

Kalia will play the unnamed girl tribute from District Three.  She was an uncredited extra in the movie Where the Wild Things Are and has been a stunt double in Red Dawn and The Sandta Clause 3: The Escape Clause.  Sadly, this character dies on the first day during the bloodbath at the Cornucopia so not much will be seen of her.

District 3 Boy Tribute:  Ian Nelson

This young little lad will get to play the tribute who is credited with collecting the land mines from the Cornucopia and reactivating them to protect the Career's food supply.  Foxface manipulates this system to steal food for herself until Katniss brings it all down with her trusty bow and arrows.  Once the Career  food supply is destroyed, the Careers have no use for him and snap his neck.  Ian has no acting history but this will make a nice first "job" for him.

Extra news:  Kristen Bell and Max Adler

Both Kristen and Max have their eyes on a part in the Hunger Games movies trilogy.  Kristen wants to be Johanna Mason.  Kristen calls The Hunger Games trilogy a wonderfully engaging story about a young female gladiator and she read the first book in one day.  I'd like to see her as Johanna and hope this works out for her.  Loving the enthusiasm!!

Max is best known for his roll on Glee where he plays a bully.  He's gunning for the role of District 2 Tribute, Cato.  Big and douchey?  Yes, I think this is a nice fit.

In other, sadder news:  John C. Reilly

John C. Reilly is rumored to be in talks to play Haymitch.  To say I am not happy about this is a gross understatement.  He has one role that he is capable of playing and it is that of an obnoxious, belligerent drunk-acting low IQ person.  Haymitch is more of a brooding, angry, calculating drunk with deep dark secrets.  Clearly John C. Reilly lacks such depth.  I cannot stand to watch anything with John C. Reilly and his constant slurred-drunk-lisp speak.  IMDB describes him as having "a homely mug, lumbering gait and unruly mop of curly hair tailor-made for offbeat character work."  My biggest issue is that while Haymitch is supposed to be rough around the edges (and Reilly has this in hand), he is also somewhat respected as he is responsible for mentoring the tributes from District 12 while they are in the Games.  And John C. Reilly is NOT Hunger Games mentor material.  In the third book, we learn he he once had a love interest and I cannot fathom someone being in love with John C. Reilly.  It is also rumored that he is in talks with another production: Oz: The Great and Powerful.  James Franco is set to star in Oz and let's all hope John C. Reilly takes that one instead of Hunger Games.  John C. Reilly rant over for now.

Filming is scheduled to begin in the next few weeks in North Carolina!!!

Deviled Eggs With a Kick

I can't say that I know anyone who doesn't like deviled eggs.  They are a generally a crowd pleaser and I am kicking it up a notch just in time for Easter dinner at my grandparent's house.  Went to see my grandma yesterday, who by the way is doing much better-thanks for the prayers!!-and I told her I was making deviled eggs.  When I left, the last thing she said to me was, "Don't forget the deviled eggs!"

Then had a slight panic this morning while having brunch with Jeremiah.  He was checking his Facebook from his phone and said, "Someone said Wal-Mart is like it is at Christmas."  Panicked I said, "Oooooh noooooo!  I have to make deviled eggs!  Everyone is probably making deviled eggs!"  Jeremiah said, "Ummmmm, I think everyone will want eggs to dye for Easter eggs."  He was so right and always stating the obvious.  I hadn't even thought of that.  But after getting to Wal-Mart and marching straight back to the egg bin, there were in fact some eggs!  Usually I like the Organic brow variety but one carton of those had a hair stuck to it, one carton was missing an egg and I didn't check the third since I needed two cartons.  I went with Eggland's Best Extra Large eggs.

So first, I took some pictures of the eggs.  Ha!  Ok, really, first I filled my very favorite Emeril stock pot with water.  Didn't measure, just left some room for the boil.

Then I placed 24 eggs in the water.  For those of you who aren't a math wiz, this will make 48 deviled egg halves if there are no casualties.

When the water begins to boil, set timer for 20 minutes and turn the heat down to medium if it's not already.  I've read about various ways to hard boil eggs.  Someone said to bring the eggs to a boil, remove from heat, cover and let sit for 12 minutes.  Others said different things.  This is the Candace method derived from years and years of my mom telling me, "I don't want my yolks runny!" when I boiled eggs while living at home.  So according to us, it's ok if the shell cracks.  At least you know it's done.  Note:  a cracked shell isn't good if you're planning to decorate for Easter eggs.

Ding!  When the timer goes off, remove the pot from the burner and place under cold running water.  I just let the pot overflow with cold water for a while.  I boiled the "EB" right off these eggs!

When they are cool enough to not scald your fingers, begin to peel them.

Rinse off shell debris and cut in half.

Pop the very cooked yolk out into a bowl.

When all the yolks are ready add:
8 tablespoons Mayonnaise
6 tablespoons Spicy Brown Mustard
6 tablespoons Hot Sweet Mustard
3 tablespoons Horseradish Mustard
4 teaspoons white sugar

I used the following but any brands will work:

Use a handheld mixer to mix the ingredients.  When mixed, you can either pipe the mixture into the egg halves or use a spoon.  This time I used my Pampered Chef small cookie scoop.  It worked really well.  When the mixture is in the eggs, add a pimiento stuffed green olive to the top of each one. And here we are:

Oh yeah!  A dash of paprika and you're good to go.  Place in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve.  As you can see, I only ended up with 35.  Jeremiah tested them for me and said they were "really terrible" as he ate one after another. :)

Happy Easter!

Hunger Games: The Movie: PRIM, Effie, Districts 1 & 11

So here we go!  Big Hunger Games announcements made this week-and it's only Wednesday!  The casting is zipping along now.  And here are the latest installments:

Primrose 'Prim' Everdeen:  Willow Shields

I am LOVING the look of this girl...unibrow and all.  She appears sweet and innocent much like Prim is in the books.  She was in In Plain Sight but is relatively a newcomer.  Prim's role is pivotal, especially in the first book.

Effie Trinket:  Elizabeth Banks (98% sure)

Effie Trinket is the effervescent escort who helps prep Katniss and Peeta and keeps them on a tight schedule.  E Banks may absolutely be the one who gets the honor of sending some poor, innocent children to what they can only imagine is their deaths.  In the movie, this role is important because she gives vital information not only to the tributes but also to the audience (especially those who didn't read the books.....shame shame).

She has been staring on 30 Rock (my favorite show!) as of late.  And has also acted in Scrubs, Fred Claus, Spider-Man 2 & 3, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Catch Me if You Can among many, many others.  Fans and followers of the Hunger Games overwhelmingly wanted wanted Kristen Chenoweth to play Effie.  I was right there with them.......but, I do think Elizabeth can pull this off..."this" being Effie's painfully bubbly personality.  And she will get to say, "Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"

District 1:
Marvel and Glimmer, two of the "career" tributes.  This deadly duo are, for the most part, spot on.

Glimmer:  Leven Rambin

Leven has been in One Tree Hill, Wizards of Waverly Place, CSI: Miami, Scoundrels, Grey's Anatomy (as McSteamy's long, lost pregnant daughter), and All My Children.  She seems to have the experience and she is exactly as I pictured Glimmer.  Beautiful, with long blonde hair, she is a great pick.

Marvel:  Jack Quaid

Jack is the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.  He has no IMDB profile and the Hunger Games will be his first acting endeavor.  Though we don't have much to go on as far as what Marvel looks like (or as far as Jack's acting chops)-there was no strong description in the book-we do know he is a supreme punk.  I imagined him looking like a punk but not such a baby-faced punk.  In any case, this should be a good starting role for the young Quaid and we shall see if it makes or breaks him.

District 11:
Rue, Katniss's in-arena ally, and Thresh, Rue's monster of a counterpart have also been cast!  Though both are relatively "unknowns," I think they are great!

Rue:  Amandla Stenberg

Rue made me think of a little pixie or tree fairy in the book.  She was so nimble and light, flitting from tree to tree.  And I know I picked Willow Smith, but Amandala seems absolutely perfect for this role.  I'm very excited about her playing Rue.

Thresh:  Dayo Okeniyi

He looks big and while I'm sure he's friendly in real life, I can definitely see him being intimidating in the movie.  He looks like he packs the power that this role requires.

Other roles sure to be cast soon are those of Gale, Peeta and Katniss's mothers as well as Haymitch, President Snow, Greasy Sae, Madge and the 18 or so other tributes from other districts.  Can't wait and I will keep you posted!  The movie release date is set for March 23, 2012 so mark your calendars!!!

The Day was Easter

The place was Wilmar Farm.  My family was sitting outside in the yard under the beautiful, giant trees.  The kids had already hunted and re-hunted Easter eggs after a delicious Easter dinner, which followed the morning church service.

It was at this time my grandpa told me that the weather we have on Easter is what the weather will be like for the seven following Sundays.  And call it coincidence, but he was right on that year.

So every year on Easter-even if he was "pulling my leg"-I take special note of what the weather is like on Easter and see if it matches the seven Sundays after.

This year, in Oklahoma, we may be in the middle of days and days of thunderstorms on Easter.  We will see.  And we will see if the seven Sundays after are stormy also.

Happy Easter!

"If Nothing is Going Well Call Your Grandmother" Italian Proverb

The Italians had it right.  Grandmas have all the answers and are more than happy to be there anytime you need anything....or at least mine is.

When my first boyfriend and I broke up (many, many years ago) I was shocked and so very sad.  My parents weren't crazy about him so I couldn't talk to them.  My friends were probably tired of hearing about it and as I drove home for lunch one day I was a big ball of unsettled emotions.  I pulled into the driveway only to find my grandpa's truck.  He was working on something outside my parent's house but inside the truck was my grandma.  I climbed inside with her and she was more than happy to counsel me over my very recent heartbreak.  And yes, I made a full recovery.

She's also the woman who told me how models pose nude without really showing anything.  Ha!  And is famous for saying, "I'm going to rip your arm off and beat you with the bloody stub!", calling us "dummies" when we were, well, acting like dummies and making the best food you've ever eaten including my personal favorite: chocolate gravy.  I love this woman and she has a very special place in my heart.  She's always been on my side and a great cheerleader and supporter for everything in my life.

This past week while I was working an event in OKC, she was admitted to the hospital with a scary and dangerously low platelet count.  I will spare you all the stats and details but she ended up having to have three bags of platelets and is now on steroids to prevent them from dropping so rapidly.  She also underwent a bone marrow biopsy.  We are still waiting on the results from that test.  It is safe to say without the platelets, she might not have made it.

In Oklahoma, we are blessed with the Oklahoma Blood Institute.  I have set up an account in her name: Erra Timmons (pronounced "Ear-ah") and anyone in Oklahoma can donate in her name to help offset the cost of the much needed blood products.  Also, if you have donated in the last year, you may add those donations to her account as well.  Jeremiah and I are going to donate platelets here in Ada on Thursday and I'd like to encourage everyone to donate also!  It doesn't have to be platelets.  It can be any blood product.  And you don't have to be a match.  What you donate won't actually go to her, but she will be credited with your donation.

At this time nothing is really "going well" for my grandmother and I'd like to try to change that.  Blood donation is easy and something we can all (for the most part) do.  Thank you in advance and remember DONATING SAVES LIVES!

To set up a donation appointment in Ada, call Roberta at (580) 559-0421.  When you get there, they will ask you during the first part of your appointment if you are donating for a group or on anyone's behalf.  The key words are, "I'd like to credit my donation to Erra Timmons."  If you are not in Ada and would like to donate, click here for a list of Donor Center locations and phone numbers in Oklahoma.

If you have donated in the last year and would like to have that applied to her account, you can call Shelly Thomas at (580) 559-0417.

Please keep her in your prayers!!

Hunger Games: The Movie: Peeta and Gale

So casing for Peeta and Gale has been finalized.  Yes, to some this might be old news but I'm working an event and have only a precious few minutes to get this up.  It has been bothering me since last week when I found out the selections.  I'm not really thrilled with them:

Gale Hawthorne:  Liam Hemsworth

Yes, his blonde hair can be died dark but I don't think there's any way he can shake the "big, dumb jock" vibe he gives off.  Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobs said, "Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was on the actor we cast to capture him by showing not telling."  How lucky for Liam since I doubt he has much of a vocabulary.  And not to delve into his personal life but dating Miley Cyrus?  Really?  I suppose we've all made terrible dating mistakes so maybe he can overcome the odds stacked against him.  Needless to say, this is NOT the Gale I pictured while reading the books.

Peeta Mellark:  Josh Hutcherson

Again, bring on some hair color.  But not so sure this pretty boy will look convincing as a blonde.  He has a better resume than Liam and will probably pull off this role.  Author Suzanne Collins is a fan of Josh's.  She said, "Three lines into the read I knew he'd be fantastic.  Josh totally captured Peeta's temperament, his sense of humor and his facility for language.  I'm thrilled to have him aboard."  If Suzanne likes him, hopefully that's a good sign.

In conclusion, when I first saw these two, Amy pointed at the two side by side photos on her computer screen and said, "It's Peeta and Gale."  Naturally, I assumed Josh was Gale and Liam was Peeta....though I'm not sure that would be a good fit anyway.  The next roles rumored to be cast are Katniss's sister, Prim, and her mentor Haymitch.  Can't wait to see who is chosen.
